beta test server

emulator
A software program that mimics the functionality of either hardware or a different piece of software. A server emulator, for instance, mimics the functions of a server program. The Earth & Beyond emulator project mimics the functions of the live Earth & Beyond server.

Colloquial for the Earth and Beyond emulator project.
error
A problem with design or code that affects a software program adversely. Symptoms of errors can include degraded performance, unintended actions (bugs), complete loss of functionality (lockups), or the program entering an unrecoverable state and being forced to close (crashes.)
exploit
Taking advantage of bugs, errors, or oversights in design or coding to gain an unfair and unintended advantage, without the use of cheats, hacks, or bots. An example would be item duplication.
GM
Abbreviation for Game Master. These staff members are responsible for ensuring an orderly game experience. GMs are members of the Emulator staff and are superseded by Administrators and Developers. Being granted GM capability is handled on an invitation-only basis; it is against rules to ask to be named GM.

Net-7
Refers mainly to the C++ version of the EnB-Emulator, but can also refer to the emulator launcher (which launches both the C++ version and the Java version), as well as the installation package (Net7 Setup, which installs both the C++ and Java server emulators.) Named after Net-7, an in-game news service faction that provides most intersteller public information.

Non-Player Character. Denotes a character in-game that is controlled by the game.
sector
An area in the game that consists of open space, where the player may fly their ship around, mine asteroids, engage in combat, and/or explore.

Tracking notes added manually by users to the Trac system. When a beta-tester discovers a bug or error, usual procedure is to create a ticket for it, so that the status of the bug or error and any resolution for it can be tracked easily.
